Germany - Spain

Gary Lineker, a fantastic striker in his playing days, once said something like this, “Football is a game between two sides, they play for 90 minutes and when the game is finished, Germany win”. In my opinion Germany have not reached the same heights as they did two years ago in the World Cup, but all the same they will play in the EURO 2008 final. Lineker was right, the German winning mentality is something else.

Germany defeated the Turkish ‘reserves’ in the semi final but their performance was far from convincing. They had three scoring chances and got three goals. Their defence was shaky throughout and even their goal scoring hero P Lahm was a safety risk. Rolfes and Ballack were having disastrous games and quite frankly I saw nothing special from any of the German players.

I suggest that, despite their win, Germany played a worse game against Turkey than when losing to Croatia in the group phase. They picked themselves up after the Croatia encounter and we will most likely see an improved display from the Germans in this final as well. They will continue with their 4-2-3-1 formation, but this time Frings will come in for the unlucky Rolfes, joining Hitzlsperger on the defensive midfield. Klose up front, in front of Podolski, Ballack and Schweinsteiger. I am waiting for Hitzlsperger to find the net. His famous shots have so far been off target, but he gets closer all the time. His long range efforts made the day for the Villa supporters during his years at Villa Park.

Spain toyed with a tired looking Russian side in the semi final. The Dutch must be wondering why they had to meet the "other" Russian side in the quarter final. Nevertheless the Spanish second half display in the semi final was the best that I have seen in this tournament. Just when you thought that the absence of the injured leading scorer D Villa would hurt Spain, Fabregas demonstrated his greatness. D Silva also had a great game and the entire Spanish team impressed with their fantastic passing game. D Villa will not be able to play in the final and coach Aragones will most likely stick to his old system of 4-5-1 now that Villa is sidelined. This of course means that Fabregas will play from the start. He could however also opt for a 4-4-2 formation with Guiza (true sharp shooter) alongside Torres.

Having seen the two semi finals one is tempted to say that UFEA might as well hand over the trophy to Spain before the match, but this is a new match, new circumstances and it could be that Spain peaked in the semi final. Where do you go from the peak? Downwards! Any time you see Germany as underdogs, alarm bells should ring. Suffice it to say that from a footballing perspective Spain should win this final, but which side will thrive in this special occasion? Probably Germany, and now they are in the position of underdogs, the pressure is largely off. Outside of Germany not many people believe that Germany will be able to defeat Spain. I also live outside Germany. Spain to win

aiyoh, luck's been pretty bad this euro laaaa. hahaha. supported france at the beginning and they got kicked out in the group stages! Then supported turkey and they got knocked out by a last min goal to germany although they played really well and deserved to at least hold germany to a draw. oh well, life goes on. hopefully i get my prediction correct for today's game! Cmon Russia! watch out for andrei arshavin! oh ya, NICOLE WORE A SKIRT TODAY! NICOLE, YOU LOOK DARN HAWWWWWWWT!!! :D :D :D

Russia vs Spain

I love the way that Hiddink's Russia play their football. Like a Arsenal side in top form, using first and foremost speed. You have to agree that Arshavin would fit in perfectly in the Arsenal team.

Russia lost their opening game to Spain 1-4. That sounds like a brutal loss, but in my opinion it was not. Zyrianov hit the post for Russia with Casillas beaten and in the very next minute Spain scored their second goal. David Villa scored a hat trick but you could always sense that Russia had goals in them. After the game Hiddink stated - "We have to be more streetwise". Since that first match with Spain, Ignashevich has returned to the Russian defence and they have become much tighter with him playing again. Arshavin was suspended then and by now we all know what he can do.

For this match Russia will be without the suspended duo, Denis Kolodin and Torbinsky. Kolodin, regular defender, will be replaced by Shirokov or V Berezutsky. Kolodin's rocket shots will be missed, but I do not regard him as an outstanding defender. Torbinsky features mostly as a susbstitute, but an important one. Pavlyuchenko up front with Arshavin in the hole, that is as good as Torres and Villa, maybe stronger at the moment.

Spain will be able to draw from the same squad that bored us against Italy in the quarter final. I guess that it was always going to be a tepid affair and I will not read too much into it. There is some slight doubt concerning one of their best players, M Senna, Xabi Alonso is ready to replace him if necessary. Spain are a class act and they will certainly be more enterprising, more courageous against Russia than vs. Italy. Cannot say that I am crazy about their slow passing game, but that is their build up tactics. I do not think that Hiddink and Russia will be easily fooled this time around. Russia to win! Good luck!

happy advanced birthday to eva! i love you! will you marry me??? HAHAHA! okay, mnow for the tips that all of you have been waiting for!
GERMANY vs TURKEY

It is rare to have such huge favourites in a semi final. Right or wrong? You decide! What Turkey have done so far is outside the framework of rationality, at least in my opinion. When Greece won the Championship four years ago they were deserved winners thanks to some awesome defensive football. Turkey? Well they just hang in there and then they have picked up this nice habit of scoring some unbelievable late goals. So Germany better be leading this game comfortably with some 20 minutes to go, or else......
Turkey will unfortunately be severely under strength for this semi final. Their offensive aces Nihat, Tuncay Sanli and Arda Turan are all out, as well as E Asik, Emre Gungör and T Metin. S Cetin and Emre Belözoglu could possibly be involved. At least they will have M Aurelio back. They have to rely on Semih Senturk for goals then, maybe Erdinc, but Kazim Kazim is in rather poor form at the moment. Decent midfield however with H Altintop, M Aurelio and M Topal from the start. Will this offensively depleted Turkish side be aiming for the 0-0 result? Yes, I think so!
"The Deutsche Mannschaft" fooled me again. I seldom go against German sides in Championships, but I managed to convince myself that the Portugese were much better than Germany ahead of their quarter final meeting. While the Portugese underachieved,Germany saved their best display for the quarter final. Traditionally Germany deliver under pressure and I should have known better. Expect the Germans to be largely unchanged but they may make way for a fit again T Frings. In that case Rolfes or Hitzlsperger will be sacrificed. Probably M Klose up front in front of Podolski, M Ballack and B Schweinsteiger. This one striker system worked just fine against Portugal.

However, i feel that this is the year for the Turks! Rmb that Greece won the last Euro Champ and now it will be the turn of another underdog to win. Turkey! But dont take them to win in 90 mins. Take them to qualify! My prediction is that it will go all the way to the lottery of the shootout and Turkey will win it based on their luck in this tournament and Lehmann being a damn lousy keeper! Good luck!
